Wedding Cakes: From Top to Bottom

Making the base and choosing your wedding cake topper can be the two most important things you do for your wedding cake. Just like your lives together, you need a solid foundation if you’re going to have an awesome cake.

Finding the perfect base doesn’t need to be as hard as you may think. Oftentimes, you can purchase premade ones. You can also find vintage cake stands at antique stores or flea markets.
If you’re making a homemade one, you must start with a thick board large enough to suit your cake and strong enough to hold the weight. You can cover the base with foil or paint it to seamlessly match the colors of your cake and wedding. Wrapping ribbon around the base and attaching pearls or buttons can add to the feel of the cake. If you need your baker to supply the base, they’ll be more than willing to help you out with the task.

Wedding cake toppers are yet another daunting task for the bride and groom. What does the topper symbolize? It’s a way to express who you are and what your style is. I prefer vintage ones, but there are nearly endless styles and types to choose from—you’re sure to find one that fits your unique flair.

Wedding cake toppers symbolize the undying love of the bride and groom as well as the union of two people that will last a lifetime. Using an aged couple as the topper can symbolize a life spent growing older together. Wedding cake toppers are often the only part that can be saved to remember the cake, so you want to choose one that is meaningful and timeless.

There is speculation as to where the wedding cake topper originated. The story goes something like this: A young baker’s daughter asked her father to make something that would symbolize her unfaltering love for her groom. After many hours of pondering what to do, the baker constructed a miniature replica of the bride and groom and placed it on top of the cake. When the bride saw the beautiful cake with the topper placed on the uppermost tier, she was overcome with joy. She kept the topper as a symbol of the love she had for her husband.

A cake topper today is pretty much whatever you want it to be. You can have custom toppers made to resemble you and your spouse, or you can go in a completely different direction. We’ve seen toppers of couples with their pets, Star Wars toppers, adorable animal ones–the options are never ending.

One important thing to remember when choosing a topper or accessorizing your cake in any way is that it’s your cake–you should make it look the way you have always dreamed. You don’t have to choose something just because of tradition; however, it’s always nice to think up clever ways of keeping traditions in mind when planning your wedding and wedding cake.
