The story goes something like this: A young baker’s daughter asked her father to make something that would symbolize her unfaltering love for her groom. When the bride saw the beautiful cake with the topper placed on the uppermost tier, she was overcome with joy. She kept the topper as a symbol of the love she had for her husband.

A cake topper today is pretty much whatever you want it to be. You can have custom toppers made to resemble you and your spouse, or you can go in a completely different direction. We’ve seen toppers of couples with their pets, Star Wars toppers, adorable animal ones–the options are never ending.

One important thing to remember when choosing a topper or accessorizing your cake in any way is that it’s your cake–you should make it look the way you have always dreamed. You don’t have to choose something just because of tradition; however, it’s always nice to think up clever ways of keeping traditions in mind when planning your wedding and wedding cake.
