A Sweet Escape

There are people out there who hate cake. I know, I feel sorry for them too, but still, they’re out there. So what’s a bride who hates cake to do?

Doughnut cake!

At one of my weddings this year, the bride’s father built her a three-tiered platform with hooks on the sides. The fine people at Lamar’s made her doughnuts. We stacked the tiers with delicious dough treats and hung more ringed viddles on the hooks. The cake topper? Well it was a giant chocolate eclair that bride and groom lovingly ate from one end to the other, meeting in the middle to smooch.

If you love cake but are looking for a novel approach to the dessert part of the evening, here are some other ideas:

  • Cupcakes! You can pick different flavors (your fave, your partner’s fave, Mom’s fave) just like you would with a classical tiered wedding cake. Cupcakes can also be tiered or plated at each table for your guests to enjoy whenever. Check out this post for some more cupcake inspiration!
  • Want to experience the classic cake in a new way? Try a non-tiered cake where you leave the tiers separate. Or do cakes of different shapes all laid out on the cake table. You could also do mini cakes — two or three tiered cakes that are miniature versions of the big guys.
  • Candy buffets allow you highlight childhood favorites or imbibe your sweet tooth. And you can always try a combination of candies, cookies, and other sweetened goodies. Mix and match your favorite nibbles for full effect!

  1. My fiance and I aren’t big on cake so we’re planning on having pies and ice cream cones. The trick is finding a vendor who can do both…I’m going to try The Shoppe since we live less than a block away and are getting married at the City Park Pavilion…wish us luck!

  2. Melissa, The Shoppe is a great place! They’re a fellow Indie Bliss vendor. And pies AND ice cream cones? Hell, I wanna marry you!
